The formats

Many debates have addressed the strategies for selecting the formats of representation. Everybody agrees that adopting IIO standards is mandatory. But, in many cases, the transfer from ‘dynamic’ to ‘fixed’ is blocked by the fact that the formats in the dynamic phase are ‘proprietary’.

The most difficult situation lies in the video domain: large to huge data repositories and rare use of standards.

The recommendations arising could be summarised as follows: keep the original ‘proprietary’ format on its original support; convert immediately on MJEG-2K (4K or better, if applicable); produce access copies in MPEG-4 SD (or HD, if applicable); produce thumbs in JPEG.
